Creating A Basic Alert Workflow

A good starting point is to create an alert workflow that changes the resolution state of specific rules and monitors. When an alert is activated by these rules and monitors, the alert will be changed to a resolution state of SendToConnector. Your ticketing or upstream systems can then pickup these specific alerts.

Here are the changes we are going to make to this Alert:

  • Resolution State: SendToConnector – This places the alert in a resolution state, to which ticketing systems can subscribe to.

Steps:

  1. First, we Identify the Name of the Monitor or Rule Creating the Alert in the SCOM Console under alert Details. In this case we want the Logical Disk Free Space Monitor
  2. Next, we open the SCOM Alert Update Connector Pro Website in a web browser
  3.  In the Search All Box we type in the name of the monitor or rule.
  4. Then we pick the monitor or rule.
  5. Next, we click the New Button
  6. Finally I select Resolution State from the drop down and then select SendToConnector

Now – when a new alert comes in, it gets inspected by the SCOM Alert Update Connector Pro and if it matches my workflow criteria it will be modified automatically, as we see below. All other alerts will be sent to a resolution state of Processed.

I could then have a ticketing system subscribe to All Alerts in Resolution State SendToConnector (251). In this case the only alerts that the ticketing system would pickup would be disk space alerts.

To test the connector on an alert that has already been processed. Simply change the Resolution State to New. This will cause the alerts to be re-processed.

If I were using standard e-mail alerts. I could simply have an e-mail subscription subscribe to Resolution State SentToConnector (251).

If you want to create more meaningful resolution states to use in the tool such as SentToNetcool or SendToServiceNow. Please see Creating Additional Resolution States
